Newegg‘s regular price is $79.99 (savings of $50). This is not the latest version; PowerDVD 12, which is the current version, is sold by the vendor for $49.95 (standard), $79.95 (pro), or $99.95 (ultra), although I recall seeing that Cyberlink had their software 50% off on New Year’s Day, so they do have periodic sales if you’d rather wait to buy the latest version. You probably can learn what the difference is between the versions (11 vs. 12) and editions (Standard vs. Pro vs. Ultra) by checking out their website.

If you bought an OEM BD drive that didn’t come with playback software, you probably need to buy this or a comparable product. Unfortunately, Microsoft doesn’t bundle BD codecs with Windows, as they do with DVD codecs. (Blu-ray disc drives only read the data off the disc; they don’t interpret the video.) Admittedly, PowerDVD is obnoxious, because you have to pay for each upgrade; Cyberlink doesn’t patch previous products for compatibility with new BDs that come out (e.g., Star Wars trilogy/anthology on BD). Apparently their customer service is horrible, according to Newegg reviews.

Personally, version 9 (bundled with my BD drive) has worked fine on the three movies I’ve watched so far, and it integrates (almost) seamlessly with Windows 7 Media Center. I say “almost,” because I haven’t figured out how to get my IR remote to control playback in the PowerDVD plug-in. (Fortunately, I can still use my Lenovo key-mote I bought back in early December.)

Bottom line: for $30, it’s definitely a deal, but you’re not getting the absolute latest version, which could be an issue for playing back the latest BDs coming out. If you bought an OEM drive and haven’t been able to play anything, you should seriously consider buying this, unless you prefer another software package (e.g., Corel WinDVD). Personally, I’d buy a standalone player over playing the full price, but I have a HTPC that is taking up the top half of my media cabinet, so I don’t have anywhere to put an extra media player anyway.) If you know of open-source BD codecs … well, let everyone know! (It’s Sony proprietary, so there probably aren’t any … yet.)

On the surface this looks like a great deal for an SSD, but read the reviews and you may not think so. There are many complaints about this drive including a chipset that some claim to be slower, less reliable, and provide less disk space than most other chipsets. Also there are some reports of drive failures. Be warned of potential hassles if you decide to buy this drive. If you are looking for a great SSD, our recommended picks are any drive with a Sandforce chipset. Tough to find one of those priced under $1.50/GB, but most of them should be high performers and reliable.

On a side-note, it appears that hard drive manufacturers are still only beginning to recover after the devastating floods in Thailand which crippled the hard drive industry. According to some media reports, hard drive manufacturers may not return to pre-flood production levels until this Fall (maybe 9 months). That means a 2TB hard drive which goes for $225 to $250 today may see a price drop of about $10 to $30 in the next couple weeks, however the average price of 2TB drives may only drop about $10 per month for the foreseeable future. This is sad news since a 2TB hard drive went for around $70 ($0.035/GB) back in October, but the good news is things are recovering.
